Tips For Healthy Eyes

I spent my early month as a Nurse working in an eye hospital in Lagos. To be honest, ophthalmology is an interesting field. I will be sharing some tips for healthy eyes in today’s blog post as it is of utmost importance to care for your eyes.

Regarding your eyes as your body’s windows or mirror is not an understatement. To be frank, your sight is as important as every other function of your body.

Most importantly, do not neglect your eyes while caring for the other parts of your body. Want to care for your eyes? Here are the most practical ways to go about it.

Tips For Healthy Eyes

(1) Nourish Your Eyes

Eat plenty of whole foods including grains, dark leafy greens, and citrus fruits. Nutrients like zinc, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin are especially protective for your eyesight. They help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or slow its progression if you already have it.

Also, Zinc-rich foods such as oysters, poultry, and lean meat are good for the eyes.  Vegetarian sources of zinc include beans, peanuts, and peas. Beta-carotene is found in brightly-colored yellow and orange fruits and vegetables.

Lutein & zeaxanthin are found in leafy greens like kale, spinach, and collard greens. Lower amounts of these nutrients are found in corn, green peas, broccoli, romaine lettuce, and eggs.

(2) Protect Your Beautiful Eyes From The Sun

Do you know that ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can harm your eyes? Cataracts, Macular degeneration and cornea burns are popular eye conditions that result from excessive UV sun exposure.

Always wear sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B ray when you are outside, even on cloudy days.

As a matter of fact, effective sunglasses do not cost too much. They are usually affordable.

You can also rely on wide-brimmed hats, as well as umbrellas to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

(3) Guard Your Eyes From Screen Light

Staring at computer, tablet, Television, and smartphone screens will likely make your eyes tired, as well as cause eyestrain. Blue light from these screens may also damage your eyes.

Stick to the 20-20-20 rule when logging screen time. This means that for every 20 minutes you look at your device screen, you should gaze at something that is at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

In addition, make use of good ergonomics when you are on the computer. Make sure that the PC screen is at eye level or slightly lower. Also, ensure to sit at approximately 25 inches away from the screen. You should also make sure there is adequate lighting when working on the computer. I will recommend you buy screen filters to minimize glare.

(4) Guard Your Eyes From Injuries

Eye injuries are common at home and at work. An average of 2,000 people injure their eyes at work and require medical treatment in the United States.

Consequently, experts state that over 90% of eye injuries may be prevented if people choose to wear adequate eye protection.

Wear safety glasses when working on projects that may send debris into your eyes. Also wear protective glasses when playing sports that put your eyes at risk like lacrosse, baseball, and basketball.

(5) Visit Your Ophthalmologist Regularly

If you want good eyesight and healthy eyes, see your eye doctor regularly for an eye exam.

Even people who do not wear eyeglasses should get their eyes and vision checked regularly. As a matter of fact, most people between the age of 18 and 60 need an eye exam at least once a year. People who are older than 60 years of age, as well as those who wear contact lenses or have certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure & diabetes should have an eye exam annually.

Eye exams can detect problems like long sightedness, presbyopia, astigmatism, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
